MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) — Police in Macomb County are asking for help identifying a man who was caught on camera stealing another man’s wallet at a gas station.

The incident happened at a Mobil gas station in Mount Clemens on Sept. 18, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials on Wednesday shared video of the theft.

Shortly after a patron left his wallet on the counter after making a purchase, the suspect walked up and noticed it sitting on the counter. As the clerk was looking at his phone, the suspect quickly swiped the wallet and put it in his pocket.

The suspect — a tall, white male with long, dark hair wearing a white t-shirt underneath a black zip-up sweatshirt — then paid for his purchase and walked out of the gas station.

While authorities said the theft happened at a Mobil station, the sheriff’s office did not specify which station or what time of day.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who recognizes the suspect or knows something about the stolen wallet to email Detective Suminski at jared.suminski@macombcountymi.gov.

Maybe he grabbed it so he could return it to its rightful owner. I found a credit card on the ground outside of a gas station last year so I picked it up and went back in to turn it into the clerk. I handed it to him, explaining that I found it outside the door and the girl behind me walked up and said to him "That's mine" so he handed it to her, not asking for one bit of proof. After that experience, I decided that if I ever found any valuable again, I would personally find the owner myself.
