HOWELL (WWJ) — A child has died of his injuries after a tree fell on him at the Howell Nature Center on Thursday.

The incident happened late Thursday afternoon at the nature center, located off Triangle Lake Road near Pinckney Road in Howell.

Officials said the 12-year-old boy was in critical condition when he was airlifted to University of Michigan Hospital, after the tree fell on his head.

Authorities said the 6th grader was on a field trip with his class from Our Lady of Victory Catholic School in Northville.

It's unclear at this time what caused the tree to fall.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Beth Fisher reports a representative for the nature center said the facility will be closed on Friday as they investigate how this tragedy happened.
