SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) — The search is on for a young man who allegedly broke into a rabbi's home in Southfield and demanded the people inside to give him “everything.”

It all happened around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at a home on Hilton Street, near 10 Mile and Greenfield Road, according to Southfield police.

Southfield police are investigating the incident as a "crime of opportunity."

University of Michigan President Santa Ono confirmed Thursday afternoon a group of Jewish students had gathered for dinner at the rabbi's home and were present when the suspect entered the house. It was not clear how many students were there.

Wednesday was the first night of Rosh Hashanah, one of Judaism's holiest holidays, celebrating the Jewish New Year.

When officers responded to the home they spoke to the residents and visitors inside, but learned the suspect had already fled.

The initial investigation showed that a lone suspect, described as a Black male in his late teens or early 20s had entered the home through the backdoor.

He was armed with a handgun and said, “I’m taking everything, give me everything,” according to police. The people inside the home were able to flee out the front door and no one was injured.

Police officials did not say what, if anything, the suspect took from the home, but Ono said Ono said the suspect stole a bag and fled.

Through further investigation, officers have been able to identify the suspect but are still working to bring him into custody, as of early Thursday afternoon.

Investigators also learned a female was involved in the incident and she has been taken into custody. Authorities did not say how she was involved and no information about her has been released.

Officials say it appears this was a “crime of opportunity,” but the investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities are asking anyone who knows something about the home invasion to call the Southfield Police Department at (248)-796-5500 and reference case number 24-36003.

Those who want to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

"This past year, there have been innumerable events locally and globally that have felt overwhelming and unsettling to many in our community. As tensions in the Middle East have escalated in recent days, it is more important than ever that we work collectively to offer solace and safety to one another," Ono's statement said.

"These are challenging times, but there is enormous strength in our community. Resolve with me to join together in solidarity, and help everyone feel safe, protected and empowered to live and learn at the University of Michigan."
