DETROIT (WWJ) -- Smoke continues to billow out of a historic home in Detroit, Wednesday morning, following a massive fire.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton reports the fire broke out at around 6:30 a.m. at the 100-year old home Balmoral Dr., in the Palmer Woods neighborhood.

    There are no injuries reported.

The home's current owner, Jerlando Jackson, said he was in the back carriage house, and no one was inside the main house when the fire started — video showing flames shooting from the roof.

Standing at a safe distance and watching as Detroit Fire Department crews worked to put out hot spots, Jackson said he's "still in a state of disbelief."

"We watched the fire eventually be put out," Jackson said. "It's been a couple of hours, trying to put the fire out."

There's a lot of damage, and it's believed that the 9,000 square-foot home may be a total loss.

"Don't know. We gotta assess the situation and hope we are able to still restore the house," Jackson said.

There are no injuries reported, and no danger of the fire spreading to other houses, Langton reported.

Langton said the first owner of the home was Mirton Briggs, Vice President of autobody manufacturer Briggs Manufacturing Co., who once was a part-owner of the Detroit Tigers.

It's not known what sparked the fire at this time. Officials say the cause will be investigated.
