Hurricane Beryl has made landfall with windspeeds just shy of Category 5 proportions.

According to the National Hurricane Center's 10:10 a.m. CDT update, Beryl struck Carriacou Island with maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour. Wind gusts have been measured as high as 165 miles per hour.

Meanwhile, NHC meteorologists say the Grenadine Islands and Grenada will soon feel Beryl's wrath. Forecasters say conditions on those islands are rapidly deteriorating.

Hurricane warnings remain posted for Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadine Islands, Grenada, and Tobago.

"The hurricane is currently moving across the southern Windward Islands," the NHC's 10 a.m. forecast discussion says. "A mid-level steering ridge to the north of Beryl should steer the hurricane quickly west-northwestward to westward across the Caribbean Sea during the next few days as a mid-level ridge strengthens to the north of the cyclone."

Forecasters say Beryl is expected to continue to move across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea through Wednesday. The cone of uncertainty has shifted farter west with the Yucatán Peninsula inside the bulk of that cone. However, the National Hurricane Center reiterates that any forecast beyond three days remains shaky at best.

"At days 3-5, there is some increased spread in the track guidance, likely regarding the strength of the steering ridge as Beryl approaches the northwestern Caribbean Sea and the Yucatan Peninsula," the forecast discussion says. "This portion of the forecast was nudged slightly north of the previous one, but still lies south of the consensus aids."
