We are entering the most active part of the storm season and climate experts caution everyone to remain vigilant.

Soaring temperatures and rapid intensification of storms makes this part of the season one to watch. LSU Climatologist, Barry Keim, tells us all signs still point to double digit named storms for our region.

“The warmer the sea temperatures, the more that feeds the hurricanes and right now we have record breaking sea surface temperatures.”

As temperatures this week go near and threaten to top 100 degrees, it's a sharp reminder of the swift contrasts in our weather

With that in mind, Keim says, you can expect the same in this next part of hurricane season as things go from quiet to active.

“The peak of the season is mid-August to the end of October, so expect things to pick up very soon.”

Conditions got some help from Saharan Dust during July that served to calm the atmosphere according to Keim. The hope is that it sticks around.

However, with that being unlikely, Keim says, “All the indicators still suggest a busy storm season. Updated forecasting still sees twenty-three named storms this season, so far we’ve only had four.”
