Hebert after Saints truck Panthers: An old-school 'ass whooping' in the Superdome

There are a lot of ways the New Orleans Saints regular season opener could've gone, but few would've predicted it going quite the way it did.

Everything seemed to come together on offense, defense and special teams. Records were set on both sides of the ball and New Orleans detonated on the Panthers for a 47-10 victory that left fans as stunned as they were excited.

"It’s the NFL, you win by 37 points, that’s an ass whooping," the Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert said. "Carolina, who knows, David Tepper, their owner, did he throw a drink at anyone? Did he even come to the game? He might be ready to fire the whole staff."

It's some hyperbole in regard to Carolina, who is starting off a new coaching era under Dave Canales, but it was certainly an inauspicious start. The Panthers went into last season with Frank Reich only to hit the eject button midway through the season. The Saints have been more patient with Dennis Allen despite some disappointing playoff misses, and that seemed to pay off in Week 1.

“What a way to start the season," Hebert continued. "It was unbelievable. We were the varsity and Carolina was the JV. It was truly a dominating performance.”

The Saints' 30 points in the first half set a new franchise record for a season-opener, as did the 47 points overall. The Saints are the first team in at least the past quarter century to score on their first nine drives in a season, according to the Associated Press.

Oh, and for good measure, Alontae Taylor became the first Saints defensive back in team history to log three sacks in a game. He also led the team in total tackles. Not too shabby.

“If you look just across the board, I think this is the greatest Saints win in the franchise history as far as opening games," Hebert said, "because I look at the number of categories that we were dominant, I don’t think we’ve ever done that.”
