The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office says one man was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with an SUV on Tuesday evening.

The crash happened in Metairie at the intersection of Purdue Drive and Meadowdale Street around 6:30 p.m.

"Our initial investigation indicates that the motorcycle was traveling northbound on Purdue at a high rate of speed," said Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Jason Rivarde.

"As the motorcycle approached the intersection, the SUV was crossing Purdue on Meadowdale," said Rivarde. "The motorcycle struck the side of the SUV."

Rivarde said the motorcycle operator suffered a sever head injury and died from his injuries overnight at a local hospital.

The driver of the SUV and a passenger in that vehicle sustained minor injuries.

"At this time impairment is not suspected on the part of the SUV driver, who voluntarily provided a blood sample for toxicology," Rivarde said. "Toxicology tests will be conducted on the motorcycle driver as part of an autopsy."

Google map shows Purdue does not have a stop sign while Meadowdale does have a stop sign at that intersection.
