School bus pepper spray fight results in mom’s arrest

A mother was arrested this week in Nashville after she allegedly waved a handgun near the scene of a school bus fight.

According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department , the initial incident on the bus involved students from McGavock High School. One student pepper spraying others, including the daughter of Angela Sweeney, and the bus driver pulled over at Lisa Lane and Lebanon Pike.

Pepper spray is also known oleoresin capsicum (OC), according to the National Institute of Justice . It is an organic extract of the cayenne pepper plant that can cause temporary blindness, a burning sensation in the eyes and skin and breathing difficulties. This spray is available to the public and is often marketed for self-defense.

Only pepper spray-related injuries were reported due to the incident.

Medics were treating students who were sprayed when Sweeney arrived at the scene and attempted to get on the bus. However, the bus driver preventing her from entering.

“She was apparently upset that her daughter had been pepper sprayed,” said the police department. “Sweeney went to her car and retrieved a handgun. She began to wave it around but did not point it at anyone. She then drove off.”

Responding officers stopped Sweeny on Lebanon Pike. She was taken into custody without incident and the handgun was recovered. Sweeney was charged with reckless endangerment.

Davidson County Sheriff’s Office records showed that a 36-year-old Angela Sweeney was arrested Wednesday. Her bond was set at $75,000.
