The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office today announced deputies are stepping up police presence at local schools.

It comes as detectives are "investigating a social media message containing potential threats of violence at local schools."

Sheriff James Pohlmann posted that the message references school violence, but it does not specify any particular school or community.

"Through the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office has learned this message is being shared across multiple school districts, both in-state and out-of-state."

Pohlmann is working to ensure parents they are responding to make sure  students, school staff and the community are safe.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the Sheriff has also increased security presence on and around local campuses to ensure everyone’s safety.
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with school officials, will continue to actively investigate all related information pertaining to this."

The sheriff's office asks anyone with information to call (504) 271-2501.
