50/50 chance of named storm approaching Caribbean, Gulf disturbance's chances remain low

The low pressure that is creating all this rain across the Gulf coast region still has low chances of development into a tropical depression or named storm, the National Hurricane Center says.

"A broad area of low pressure near the upper Texas coast is producing some disorganized showers and thunderstorms along and just offshore the coasts of Texas and Louisiana," the hurricane center advises. "This system is expected to linger near the coast through much of next week, and some slow development is possible if it meanders offshore."

The hurricane center gives the system a 20 percent chance of tropical cyclone formation over the next seven days.

Meanwhile, a tropical wave east of the Caribbean's outer islands has more potential.

"Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression could form while it continues moving
westward across the Caribbean Sea through the middle to latter part of the week," forecaster said.

Chances for development are 50 percent.

Another wave off the western coast of Africa has only a ten percent chance of development as it moves west across the ocean.
