WESTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Excitement is building for the solar eclipse on Monday that we will be able to view right here in western Massachusetts.

A group of students from Hampshire Regional High School are traveling to northern New England to experience a better view than we’ll see here.

Solar eclipse: What you can expect in Massachusetts

Students at Hampshire Regional High School have been learning about the solar eclipse that is taking place Monday afternoon. 157 students and 10 staff members from the school will be traveling to St. Johnsbury, Vermont which is in the path of totality.

“We’ve been studying it in science class the moon passing between the sun and the Earth making a shadow and how it’s a once in a lifetime experience for all of us so it’s going to be really fun to go up there,” said 7th grader Emmett Stith.

Another 7th grader, Austin Barcumb remarked, “I think it’s pretty cool I’ve seen some pictures online about other eclipses and I think it’s going to be cool to see it this year.”

“It’s going to be really cool there because it’s going to be completely dark and it’s going to be a lot different then if we were here because there will still be light, but there it’s going to be like nighttime,” explained 8th grader Talia Craig.

The students will be leaving early Monday morning to make the 3-hour trip to Northern New England for a once in a lifetime experience.

22News Meteorologists Adam Strzempko and Jack Wu will also be traveling to St. Johnsbury, Vermont to cover the total eclipse on Monday. You can see their reports on 22News on Monday starting at 5 p.m.
