This past Friday, Amherst College Faculty approved a motion that urged the college Board of Trustees to divest from military entities connected with the war in Gaza.

According to the college, a group of 22 professors made this happen through a provision in their by-laws, which allows any group of at least eight faculty to call a special faculty meeting. In a news release, one Amherst College faculty member stated that the institution was only the third in the country to formally endorse divestment through a full vote.

The group is calling for more colleges and universities to get involved, stating, “We encourage colleagues at other institutions with faculty governance to examine whether they are able to do something like this too.”

At this point, both the student senate and faculty have called on the board of trustees to take action. They ask that the board respond within two weeks to their demands.
