PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Berkshire Springs Holding Company, LLC was fined after their driver failed to notify a Pittsfield gas station of a diesel fuel spill.

Massachusetts bottled water company suspends operation due to PFAS contamination

According to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), on September 12, 2023, the Pittsfield Fire Department notified MassDEP of a diesel fuel spill at a service station on 480 West Housatonic Street in Pittsfield. A review of the station’s surveillance cameras shows a Berkshire Springs employee fueling the truck left the vehicle unattended while the pump was engaged. Even though the driver knew of the fuel spill, he left the station without notifying them.

The spill was contained by the Pittsfield Fire Department and the station operator, Global Partners LP, arranged a cleanup of approximately 30 feet by 30 feet impacted.

Due to the spill exceeding 10 gallons, an amount required to be reported, MassDEP issued a penalty of $13,125 to Berkshire Springs.

“It is critical that customers of gasoline and diesel fueling facilities diligently monitor their fueling operations to avoid spills of petroleum products that would negatively impact public safety and the environment,” said Michael Gorski, director of MassDEP’s Western Regional Office in Springfield. “The cleanup has been completed, and today’s penalty sends a strong message that MassDEP will hold parties accountable for failing to provide notification of releases of petroleum to the environment.”

i was a night manager at the pilot flying J in sturbridge ma for a few years. At both the old building and and the new one. This behavior isn't uncommon. The drivers are fined when they cause a sizable spill so they try to just leave and get away with it forgetting about cameras. Yes its worse if they leave but you would be shocked how many do.

Just think of fuel spillage on construction sites where mobile fuel trucks refuel on site and get away with spills.
