AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – UMass faculty met Monday afternoon and issued a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Javier Reyes.

The motion, and the subsequent meeting, were inspired by Chancellor Reyes’ decision to use police to break up a pro-Palestinian encampment a couple of weeks ago.

Faculty members voiced many concerns with the chancellor, but some say his removal won’t solve the larger issue. “It is important for us to meet with the chancellor and the administration to have dialogue, to discuss how and when wanting police,” says Kinesiology Professor Sofiya Alhassan. “Getting rid of the chancellor is not going to fix our issue of not feeling safe. He didn’t create this.”

The vote will be presented to the school administration, who will decide whether Javier Reyes will keep his job.
