SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Another hot and sunny day here in western Massachusetts and some schools do not have air conditioning.

Why is it so hot, and how can you protect yourself?

22News spoke with Principal Lisa Bakowski of Boland Elementary School to see how they are keeping students safe in this weather. “We are inside today we are not out in the heat.. luckily we have air conditioning and we are keeping our kids hydrated.”

For those schools without air conditioning there are still ways to beat the heat. When the weather is hot like this safety officials advise staff to lower the blinds in classrooms, use fans, and avoid any strenuous activity.

Principal Bakowksi says recess is mandatory and that’s where students are active. She says with this weather they had to do other activities for recess. “We need to have alternative activities where they are not very strenuous so really lowkey movements that still keep them healthy but cool.”

With school ending in about a month, some students will be heading to camp for the summer. CEO of the YMCA of Greater Springfield Dexter Johnson says the camp staff is prepared to keep children safe in the heat.

“It’s great to have that shade in a lot of areas and on those really hot days during those July weeks especially we make sure that they are not out in the direct sun too frequently, stay hydrated.. lots of water throughout the facility.”

He says sunscreen is another essential product for campers if they are spending a lot of time outdoors. On days like this, clothing plays a big role in keeping children cool. Wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing can help and you may want to avoid those darker colors that absorb the sunlight.
