South End Bridge in Springfield to close for repairs

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A portion of the South End Bridge (Julia Buxton Bridge-Route 5), spanning the Connecticut River that connects Springfield and Agawam, will be closed from Friday, May 31st to Monday, June 3rd.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) the northbound side of the South End Bridge in Springfield and Agawam will be closed from 11:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31, to 5:00 a.m. on Monday, June 3 due to road resurfacing work.

The following detours will be in place:

• For I-91 southbound: traffic will use exit 5B and follow the Memorial Bridge westbound to Route 5.
• For I-291 westbound to I-91 southbound: traffic will follow I-291 westbound to I-91 northbound and will use exit 7B to follow Route 20 westbound over the North End Bridge to Route 5.
• For I-91 northbound: traffic will use exit 5 to East Columbus Avenue, and will continue to Boland Way and over the Memorial Bridge westbound to Route 5

Drivers should be prepared for delays and may want to consider alternate routes. Signs, message boards, and police details will be in place to guide traffic. All scheduled work is weather-dependent and/or may be impacted due to an emergency.
