SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A new four-legged family member can be a big change and a big deal. Dakin Humane Society shares the most important things you should know if you plan on bringing home a cat or kitten.

Second human case of West Nile Virus reported in Hampden County, third in the state

Lee Chambers of Dakin Humane Society tells 22News, “The first preparation begins at home”. When you are bringing home a new member of your family, it is important to be ready in advance for what you might need.”

Do you have a veterinarian? If you don’t, you should see about getting one because sometimes there may be some vets who aren’t taking new patients. They’re going to come into a home that is brand new. New sights, new sounds, new smells, and especially if there are already other cats that you have, this new arrival is going to be very out of place.

There are also some other tasks at home you should check off your list before bringing home your four-legged friend.

Chambers says, “You want to go through your house and pet-proof it. Are there things lying around that maybe a pet would get into that wouldn’t be so good for them.”

If you’re living in an apartment or renting, it is also important to make sure you are allowed to have pets in your space. Dakin said it is one of the saddest moments when someone has to bring their pet back to rehome them.

Dakin also said you can speak with them or your vet to determine the right food for your pet.
