CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Residents in Chicopee gathered at City Hall Wednesday for the 2nd annual Indian Independence flag raising.

This year’s event is honoring the 77th anniversary of India breaking free from British rule. The vibrant celebration included remarks from city officials, including Chicopee Mayor John Vieau.

Raj Sanghvi, leader of the event, told 22News celebrations like this give the community a chance to reflect on the spirit of freedom, unity, and cultural pride. He also noted the importance of celebrating diversity in the Chicopee community.

“Different background, but once they come to the U.S. they melt into one pot… it’s been a proud moment for us, especially being here for so many years,” said Sanghvi.

Wednesday’s event also featured the group singing India’s national anthem that was created in 1950.
