WILBRAHAM, Mass. (WWLP) – Back to School shopping is in full swing for many parents with students going back to school this fall, and with the costs of supplies and school necessities, they are looking for a good deal.

“Prices have been crazy when you look for things so you do look for the sales,” said Cathy Belleville from Wilbraham.

School supply prices have increased 23.7% just over the past two years so deals are definitely one of the biggest ways to save some money when back to school shopping. Many stores, like Staples, have big sales during this time of year.

Staples General Manager Tim Hall told 22News, “We have a lot of good deals…. 35-cent notebooks, 50-cent crayons.”

Survey data shows some parents are expecting to pay upwards of $700, and in some states, $1,000 per kid, on back to school shopping.

“You try to buy a little at a time so it’s not a big shock all at once” said Belleville.

A big way to save money down the road is to invest in quality, durable supplies that will last for years to come, like backpacks. “Definitely looking for things that are not going to change every year for them and that they can use for a while longer,” Belleville continues.

Another big tip for parents is to “shop at home.” Make a list of what you want and need and then see what supplies you already have before buying new.

For some older students, look for student discounts at many stores when shopping for electronics, clothes, and more. Also for teachers, Staples and other stories have discounts for them to save some money when buying supplies.
