WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Westfield Police Department is evaluating speed limits to determine if they are correct for city streets.

This change allowed the city to impose a new limit in business districts and neighborhoods with thickly settled homes from 30 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour. However, Westfield Police say this change has only caused confusion for drivers and that the speed limits should have not changed for certain roadways.

A traffic study is now being conducted by the police department that will be presented to MassDOT to determine if a change is needed.

Westfield Police Captain Steve Dickinson told 22News, “As far as the changing of the signs, they are not being enforced right now. The 25mph zones… until we get things straightened out with the DOT we are not really enforcing those.”

Some roads impacted include Paper Mill Road, Prospect Street, and Western Avenue. This traffic study could take months before it’s completed.
