SAN DIEGO ( Border Report ) — The internal review to oust Tijuana Mayor Montserrat Caballero from the Morena Party is complete according to her, but party leaders in the state of Baja California say the process is far from over.

Caballero has been at odds with Morena, Mexico’s ruling party led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, ever since it turned down her bid for reelection.

Morena chose to go with another candidate who ended up winning the election held in July.

Caballero insists she has always remained loyal to the party in spite of its decision not to support her.

But Morena leaders in Baja say she acted behind the scenes to help a candidate from another party.

Last month, the Morena party launched an inquiry to see if there was enough evidence of insubordination.

“I was brought in to see evidence against me, but nothing compelling was presented,” Caballero said. “This process is over, I was never part of any formal investigation against me, it’s over.”

She also criticized party leaders during a meeting with reporters earlier this week saying Morena has never had any concrete evidence against her.

But Catalino Zavala Márquez, president of the Morena Party in Baja, stated the investigation is ongoing.

“The process is being driven by Morena’s National Commission,” Zavala Márquez said. “In time, it will make formal announcements about how the investigation is proceeding,”

He said it should be another two to three months before a decision is rendered.

“She is under investigation over actions considered to be in violation of party rights held by others and for failing to support and respect fellow party members.”
