SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Severe storms hit Western Massachusetts on Thursday afternoon leaving trees blocking road access and others on top of homes.

One family in Springfield was interrupted during dinner to a tree landing on their house.

Carmen, a mother of two told 22News that a tree went through the roof of her home and into her attic, causing damage to a bedroom and leaving behind a lot of debris.

Everyone inside the house is ok, however the family cannot stay in the home for safety reasons.

In Longmeadow Thursday evening, 100-year-old trees were ripped out of the ground. Some barely missing homes, landing on driveways and blocking roads.

Homeowners were shocked by the intense storm.

“It was very loud, extremely loud. And there was like lightning, light flashes, and a lot of noise,” said Mark Bloom from Longmeadow.

“I’ve never seen trees like this completely uprooted,” shared Janet Echeverria of Longmeadow.

Some neighbors even worked together to remove trees from their driveway by car.

Firefighters roamed through Longmeadow neighborhoods, checking in on the people in each home. Other assistance included the Town of Longmeadow Public Works. They responded to the damage within the hour to assist with cleanup.
