    Springfield to celebrate 77th anniversary of India’s independence from Great Britain

    SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Indian community in Springfield is celebrating the 77th anniversary of India’s independence from Great Britain.

    Mayor Domenic Sarno will join the Indian Association of Greater Springfield for a flag-raising ceremony. They’ll lift up the flag of India in Tower Square at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

    Wednesday, August 15 was Independence Day, marking the signing of the Indian Independence Act of 1947. The Act was made possible by years of non-violence, and civil disobedience led by Mahatma Gandhi, and ended colonialism in the country.
