BOSTON (WWLP) – The centerpiece of Beacon Hill, the Massachusetts State House, is nearing the end of a four-day full power shutdown.

This closure was scheduled and will be used to repair damage from a summer 2023 electrical fire . The July 18, 2023 fire caused an unplanned 2-day shutdown of the State House when electrical wires in the sub-basement caught fire, causing high levels of carbon monoxide throughout the building.

While hundreds were evacuated around 2 p.m. due to this 2-alarm fire, no injuries were reported.

No one will have access to the building for the duration of the shutdown to repair electrical damage, including staff and reporters. In anticipation of being unable to access the building for their usual Monday session, the House of Representatives held a session on Friday afternoon, to meet a constitutional requirement stipulating how often they must meet.

22News will have continued coverage from the State House when it reopens, which is expected to be on Tuesday morning.
