AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP)– Amherst residents interested in the Senior Tax Work-off Program have a new incentive to apply.

The Town will be increasing the tax abatement amount from $1,500 to $2,000 beginning August 20, 2024.

Amherst residents may qualify for up to $3,000 in Covid relief funds

The program offers residents aged 60 and older the opportunity to work-off up to $2,000 in property taxes a year at the minimum wage rate, provided they meet certain guidelines. Program eligibility is income based and applicants must re-apply each year.

Town Manager Paul Bockelman said, “The Tax Work-off Program is a lifeline for many seniors
in the community. By reducing the tax burden, the reduction in taxes helps seniors remain in
their homes and maintain their independence. We thank the State Legislature for providing this
    added benefit for Town residents.”

More information on the program and eligibility guidelines can be found at the Town of Amherst’s website. Persons interested in applying can contact Social Services Coordinator Lucas Schildbach at (413) 259-3062 or schildbachl@amherstma.gov.
