CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – New data shows that there has been a significant spike in driving violations here in Massachusetts.

The most common violations right now are distracted driving, speeding, and failing to stop.

The Registry of Motor Vehicles reports that Massachusetts drivers have racked up nearly 700,000 driving violations within the first seven months of this year. So far, just over half of them were warnings rather than civil or criminal citations.

Experts say this doesn’t necessarily mean there’s an increase in bad driving behavior but rather more police enforcement. Mark Schieldrop with AAA Northeast told 22News, “I think police departments are trying to address the issues we’ve been having with traffic safety and driving behavior in Massachusetts. And it’s a good reminder to drivers that police are more aware and on the lookout. They are looking out for distracted driving and speeding. If you are driving like it’s COVID and think you can get away with whatever you want, think again.”

Also in the RMV’s data, most police departments in Massachusetts have switched to electronic citation technology. Between January and July of this year, there were more than 37,000 violations for using cell phones or other devices behind the wheel.
