AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP)– The new Amherst Chief of Police was sworn in by Town Clerk Sue Audette on Monday.

Ting was named Chief in April 2024, replacing retired Chief Scott Livingstone, and began the position in May.

Gabriel Ting appointed as Amherst’s new police chief

Dozens of people attended the ceremony at the Town Hall including Town Council members and District Attorney David Sullivan; Amherst Police Officers; former Amherst Police Chiefs Scott Livingstone and Charlie Scherpa; members of the Amherst Fire and CRESS Departments; public safety officials from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst College, and neighboring communities; Town staff; numerous community members; and Chief Ting’s family.

Chief Ting said, “I learned that being an Amherst Police Officer means that I need to know how to listen, how to learn, how to adapt, and, most importantly, how to be one with our community to build relationships that move us forward in a time of unrest and uncertainty in our world today.”

A life long resident of Amherst, Ting has spent 27 years with the Amherst PD, beginning in 1997 as a Patrol Officer. During his career with the force he also served as a Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and as Captain of Operations in 2019.
