Veterinarian explains feeding your dog the right food regularly

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – If you’re thinking about taking home a new furry friend, it’s important to remember that many plants and foods are dangerous for your dog.

If you catch it too late, you may be in for a trip to the ER. While giving your dog the occasional treat may seem harmless, certain foods can result in irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. According to the pet poison helpline, dogs make up 89% of pet toxin reports in Massachusetts.

The most common toxin fed to dogs is chocolate, which is not safe to consume in any form. Dr. Brian Roy with the VCA Animal Hospital told 22News poisonous food isn’t the only way people incorrectly feed their dogs.

“Lots of people come in and are feeding inappropriately or feed adult food for puppy foods and then we have to correct it. If you have any questions whatsoever, I would just reach out to your veterinarian who’s taken care of your animals,” Dr. Brian Roy said.

While there are plenty of foods plants and other things that can be poisonous to your dog. Another important aspect is feeding your dog the right food regularly. All dog foods are not created equal. Some recent feeding trends can lead to health problems.

Dogs that consume a raw diet have higher chances of salmonella and antibiotic-resistant bacteria according to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA).

One local dog owner describes the importance of feeding your dog correctly, “I just feel comfortable knowing that he’s had a really good balanced diet. He’s 14 years old right now and he’s doing great,” Evan Plotkin told 22News.

Larger brands that are approved by WSAVA will be your best option for making sure your dog is appropriately fed.
