CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – International Overdose Awareness Day is observed this Friday, and communities in western Massachusetts are holding events to acknowledge this ongoing public health crisis.

Chicopee Mayor John Vieau was joined by representatives from Tapestry Health and other organizations for a flag raising outside City Hall Wednesday morning. Vieau told 22News that the police department and his office both work to assist people living with addiction who are looking for resources.

“There’s some nonprofit groups right here in Chicopee or my office and we’ll help and guide people and we’ll keep it anonymous and help you find the resources you need and hopefully to get the help.”

There were more than 2,100 opioid overdose deaths reported in Massachusetts last year.
