SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Baystate Health awarded $26,000 in scholarships to 24 local students pursuing healthcare careers at a special event in Springfield on Wednesday.
The students, who participated in the Baystate Springfield Educational Partnership (BSEP), will use the funds to support their higher education at institutions such as UMass Amherst, Springfield College, and Boston College.
The students, aspiring to careers in fields including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and psychology, received their scholarships as recognition of their commitment to advancing in the healthcare sector.
Tyonne Hinson, senior vice president and chief of diversity, equity, and inclusion at Baystate Health, delivered opening remarks at the event, emphasizing the importance of diversity in healthcare. Medical student and BSEP alumna Augustina Amoako also spoke, sharing her experience and how the program shaped her career path.
BSEP’s mission is to build a healthcare workforce that reflects the diverse community of Springfield. The program provides hands-on learning experiences for local high school students within Baystate Health facilities, giving them a chance to explore careers in healthcare and prepare for future internships and job opportunities.
Many BSEP students face financial challenges when pursuing higher education, and the scholarships aim to alleviate those barriers. Funded by Baystate Health’s Community Benefits Program, BSEP has awarded nearly $800,000 in scholarships since its inception, supporting students as they continue their education.
To date, Baystate Health has hired more than 500 BSEP alumni, with many serving in clinical and administrative support, allied health, nursing, and graduate medical education roles. Of the 500 alumni, 287 continue to work within the Baystate Health system.
