SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Fall is less than a month away and a new season means new potential allergies through the end of the year.

Ragweed pollen and outdoor mold are the most prominent allergens during the fall season. The airborne pollens are most common in wooded areas and outdoor gardens. Patients have already reported fall allergy in the past couple weeks.

22News spoke with Dr. David Robertson, an Immunologist with Western Massachusetts Allergy, who explained how warming temperatures could extend the season.

“Warmer seasons, increase carbon dioxide…. actually, increase the amount of pollen that ragweed specifically produces and makes the pollen actually more allergenic,” Dr. Robertson detailed. “Unfortunately, allergy suffers are probably in for a longer season this year.”

You can treat fall allergy symptoms the same way you would treat reactions from grass or tree pollen. The best way to curb severe symptoms is reaching out to a board certified immunologist.

Another tip is to make sure you’re taking any medication before you start experiencing symptoms.
