SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An honorary street naming ceremony took place in Springfield to honor the contributions of a man who has had a long history of community service.

Springfield city and elected officials along with family and friends held a ceremony and then unveiled the new street sign, Jerald “Jay” Griffin Sr Way at the corner of Quincy and Eastern Avenue to honor community advocate and former Park Commissioner Jay Griffin Senior.

“You don’t ever think about having a street named after you. Over the course of time it’s just been a matter of doing what you think needs to be done and enough people have acknowledged that you’ve done some good in this community, for this community,” Jay Griffen told 22News.

Jay Griffin Senior was one of the original founders of Springfield’s Harambee and the Stone Soul Festival.
