CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – With the flip of the calendar temperatures have been feeling more like fall to start September.

How many summer weekends had rain this year?

Temperatures were in the 40s and even some upper 30s on Tuesday morning making some wonder when the first frost will come. September 1st is the start of meteorological fall and the average high temperature in September is 76 degrees while the average low is 54 degrees.

When looking at the United States, the first frost and below-freezing temperatures occur between September 1st through September 15th usually in the higher elevations of the Rockies out west and in the high terrain of northern New England.

In Massachusetts, it is usually early to mid-October when the first sub-freezing overnight low temperature is. The Berkshires can be different though with the high terrain giving the average first frost in Pittsfield to be September 29th and Great Barrington September 22nd.

If you have vulnerable plants when it comes to the cold, some tips to keep them warm are to water them before sunset so the soil can be moist, keep the daytime heat in, and cover them with a bed sheet or blanket.

The first official day of fall is September 22nd.
