CHICOPEE, Mass (WWLP) – Residents across the state are voting today in the state primary.

“This is the way to take action, is to come out here and vote,” said Springfield resident, James Johnson. After months of candidate campaigns, the Massachusetts State Primary is Tuesday and residents all over the state are casting their ballots.

Massachusetts Primary Elections: Here is what you should know

“All of the candidates have visited us at home and spent some time going out there. It’s good to back them up and show our civic responsibility to have a voice in government,” said Springfield resident, Patrick Scahill.

Voting is a right all United States citizens have to voice in government through the candidates they elect. Voters are hoping to elect someone who will hear their concerns and work to create a solution. Sometimes, a candidate is re-elected when no one challenges them, but in Massachusetts, there are a few races where voters need to make a decision.

On the ballot, there are 4 contested primaries for residents of western Massachusetts. One statewide and three other districts in our area. Two in Hampden County and one in Berkshire County.

Depending on what they campaigned for, if elected, one could make a difference in your life.

“Especially in the local level, it affects your day to day living, so that is one of the most important things you can do as a person who lives here,” said Johnson.

The polls are open until 8 p.m. Tuesday.
