Springfield family mourns loss of mother in hit and run, safety concerns now along Boston Road Police have arrested 18-year-old Nathan Colon. He has been charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury crash causing death and motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation. Colon, a senior at Ludlow High School, was scheduled to have his license taken away from him Friday because of previous driving infractions. He is being held on a $10,000 bail and is due back in court on October 3rd.
The District Attorney’s Office believes Colon was allegedly involved in street racing. Several 911 calls both before and after the accident reported two cars traveling at high rates, allegedly traveling over 70 miles per hour when Andrews was struck. Earlier that same day, police said Colon was involved in another collision that was witnessed by officers where he also drove away.
“Sometimes, in fact, there are unavoidable accidents that happen on our roadways. Everybody makes mistakes however, this situation about which we are here today, was not an accident,” said District Attorney Gulluni.
“A lot of times we are not getting backed up by our judicial system. No rhyme or reason. Horrendous driving record and that is why some things in our judicial system need to be taken much more seriously,” Springfield Mayor Sarno said.
