SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – More affordable housing is coming to Springfield with a special ribbon cutting officially opening the apartment units on Monday.

After some much-needed TLC, rezoning, permitting and the creation of parking, two 100-year-old buildings will now serve a greater purpose. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the new Mason Square Apartments, which used to be Indian Motorcycles and Knox Automobiles. They were completely rehabilitated by the same Boston company, First Resources.

The Indian Motorcycles building was previously renovated, and now this ribbon cutting on Monday is for the newly renovated Knox Automotive apartments. The Knox Automotive buildings will become Knox Residences 1 and Knox Residences 2. Knox Residences 1 will include 54 new apartments and the second building, Knox Residences 2 will be approximately 60 apartments.

The cost of the redevelopment of the Knox Automotive building was estimated to be approximately $32 million and was financed through tax credits, federal historical credits, and a Mass Housing Partnership. The Knox project was announced back in 2020.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno was joined by Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll at the ribbon-cutting.

Office of Mayor Domenic J. Sarno

Mayor Sarno states, “My administration is proud of the continued investment and development of our neighborhoods – from housing to park projects and new schools to enhancements in infrastructure, there has been a tremendous amount of economic development in our city.  This redevelopment of the historic Knox Building is tremendous.  Gordon Pulsifer and his team at First Resources do such a tremendous job working in our neighborhoods and being considerate of our residents and business community, as evident by their property across the street at the old Indian Motorcycle building.  In total, First Resources has added nearly 300 housing units just between these two properties.  This supports my administration’s goal of continuing to invest and develop/redevelop more housing and workforce housing for our residents. I commend and thank Governor Maura Healey, Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, and Congressman Neal – both Congressman Neal and Lt. Governor Driscoll were once mayors, and always understand the heart of a mayor – who all continue to work diligently to support our housing and development goals and needs.”
