Owner of temp agency in Massachusetts pleaded guilty to multi-million tax fraud scheme

DORCHESTER, Mass. (WWLP) – An owner of a temporary employment agency based in Dorchester pleaded guilty to a multi-year tax fraud scheme.

According to the Department of Justice, 62-year-old Det Tran of Dorchester owned and operated HTP Temp. Inc. (HTP), an agency that provides temporary workers for client businesses. From at least 2018 through 2021, Tran paid $8 million in “off the books” cash wages to HTP employees, evading more than $2.1 million in employment taxes owed to the IRS.

On Wednesday, Tran pleaded guilty to two counts of failure to collect and pay over employment taxes and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 10th. He faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater.
