CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – It was another bright and comfortable day on Thursday with plenty of sunshine after a cool start.

Overall it has been a very warm summer. During meteorological summer, the period from June through August, the average temperature across the country was 73.8 degrees, 2.5 degrees above average. That makes it the fourth hottest summer on record.

According to Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, 2024 tied 2005 as the fourth warmest summer here in western Massachusetts. “It was very humid and really hot most of the time. It was a little bit hard for me to go out because I’m not too fond of the heat,” said Isabelle Shafiei of Longmeadow.

Year to date across the United States, for the period from January through August the average temperature was 56.9 degrees, which was 3 degrees above the 20th century average. That ranks it as the second warmest such period on record.

Just over the state line to our south, Hartford, Connecticut had its warmest summer on record.
