SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Dakin Humane Society helped to Clear the Shelters last weekend.

With 22News and NBCUniversal’s annual nationwide pet adoption event, Dakin offered discounted adoption fees to send as many pets into loving homes as possible. According to a spokesperson at Dakin, pet population is at its peak during the summer months, and this campaign helped older pets in particular find a home.

Dakin’s Media Relations and Development Specialist, Lee Chambers, told 22News Dakin sent home 81 pets on the weekend of September 6th, including 51 cats, 18 dogs, and other small pets including rabbits, and guinea pigs.

“A lot of people made it a family event. They came down with their kids, they wanted to have a really good time together looking for the right pet for them, so it was a great environment and they were lined up at the door, ready to come in,” said Chambers.

Although the Clear the Shelters campaign has ended, pets are available for adoption all year round. People can visit Dakin in Springfield for animal adoptions Tuesdays to Saturdays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Available pets can be viewed online , and pet listings update constantly as animals become available for adoption.
