PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Pittsfield Police have issued a fraud alert after a credit card skimmer was discovered at a Cumberland Farms store on Dalton Avenue, raising concerns for customers who may have used their cards at the store in recent days.

Card skimmer found at Berkshires Cumberland Farms

The skimming device, which was attached to the card machine at Register 1 inside the store, was found by an employee, officials said. Investigators believe the device had been placed there on the morning of September 4.

Authorities are urging anyone who used a debit or credit card at the store between September 4 and Friday, September 13 to take immediate action. Customers are advised to contact their card providers to request a new card and to closely monitor their accounts for any unusual or suspicious transactions.

Skimmers, often used by criminals to capture card information, are typically difficult to detect and can lead to stolen credit card details being sold on the black market. While fraudulent activity may not be immediately apparent, officials recommend checking for small test purchases, such as $1 charges, which schemers often use to verify whether a card is active.

Police are also encouraging cardholders to set up notifications for all transactions, enabling them to quickly catch any unauthorized use.

This incident comes just one day after a similar skimmer device was found at another Cumberland Farms location in Great Barrington, raising concerns about potential coordinated efforts. Police are continuing to investigate and are working to ensure no further devices are in place.
