SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The City of Springfield honored the former leader of the police department.

The community came together for a special dedication honoring retired Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood.

Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood retiring after 45 years with Springfield Police Department

Clapprood served the people of Springfield for 45 years and lead the department since 2019 before her retirement earlier this year. She started with the department in 1979 when there were very few women in law enforcement.

Clapprood worked her way up through the ranks from officer to sergeant, to lieutenant, then captain and deputy chief until she was sworn in as Commissioner of the Springfield Police Department in October of 2019. Leaving a lasting legacy serving her community.

The ice rink at Springfield`s Cyr Arena in Forest Park will be renamed in her honor becoming the “Cheryl Clapprood Rink.”

Clapprood has been coming to cyr arena for as long as she can remember. This ice rink is also where the Springfield Police has there learn to skate program, where officers teach children of all ages how to ice skate.

Mayor Sarno states, “Former Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood served with honor, distinction, and utmost professionalism. She has worked hard on several initiatives including body-worn cameras (first in the State), numerous police-community initiatives like Cops and Bobbers, gun by back programs and national night out, and continuing the legacy of officer Stephen O’Brian who was one of the first officers who took apart of Learn to Skate. I look forward to honoring Cheryl Clapprood with the renaming of Cyr Arena to Clapprood Rink.”
