    Chautauqua Co. Undersheriff Richard Telford passes away

    ( WJET/WFXP )– The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office announced with heavy hearts Tuesday morning Undersheriff Richard Telford has passed away.

    The sheriff’s office announced Telford’s passing on Facebook saying he passed away surrounded by family after spending more than 30 years in the Chautauqua community.

    The sheriff’s office remembers Telford as a great officer, leader, friend to many, father, husband, brother and son. They also said no task was too small or big for Telford

    “Rich was a man of integrity, he could always be counted on to do the right thing. He displayed a courage that was second to none, which he demonstrated this past year in his courageous battle and not to mention throughout his over 30 years of service to this county. His character was evident as he was always there displaying the great values we count on. Respect – not only did Rich demonstrate unconditional respect in all his dealings about the respect that so many people had for him was so evident,” the sheriff’s office said in the post.

    “It is with deep sadness that I share the news of the passing of our Undersheriff, Richard Telford. His loss is felt profoundly throughout Chautauqua County and the community he served so faithfully.

    Chautauqua County Executive Paul Wendel Jr. issued a statement on Telford’s passing saying:

    Undersheriff Telford was a remarkable leader, a dedicated public servant, and a colleague manyof us were honored to work alongside. His commitment to our community and impact on all of us will never be forgotten.

    We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and friends during this incredibly difficult time. In this time of grief, let’s come together to support one another and reflect on the values he stood for—integrity, service, and care for the community.”

    The Forestville Fire Department also shared their condolences recalling of the fire calls he responded to and investigated calling him one of a kind.

    Telford was named undersheriff, the department’s second-highest position, in 2021 and first joined the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office in 1991.
