CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – September has been a very dry month here in western Massachusetts, but there is finally some rain in the forecast.

If you don’t have a lawn sprinkler system chances are your grass is getting pretty dried out right now. So far this month we haven’t seen much in the way of rainfall here in western Massachusetts.

22News Storm Team Meteorologist Chris Bouzakis says, “It’s been incredibly dry for the month of September, we’ve only seen .27 inches of rain on the month, and that all came on September 7th so we’re closing in on almost three weeks of not seeing any accumulating rainfall here in western Massachusetts.”

The lack of rain is causing some lawns to turn yellow and brown but there is some good news with rain finally in the forecast and with the lawns getting pretty dry any rain we get will be beneficial.

Gary Courchesne of G & H Landscaping says it’s important to make sure your lawn gets water this time of year, “It’s not going to make burnt lawns revive in five minutes but it will certainly substantiate some water into the soil structure and allow the roots to keep developing.”

“It’s important that the lawns get watered now because this is the best time for growing grass from a route stand the grass has slowed down in it’s growth but the roots are developing over winter so it’s critical that water gets down into the root zone,” Courchesne adds.

In addition to watering your lawn you should continue to mow it weekly and cut your grass at a height of around 3 and a half inches. Now is also a good time to seed and put down fertilizer as well.
