AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – UMass Amherst celebrated disability as an identity at their “Caravan for Disability Freedom and Justice” event Wednesday morning.

The caravan traveled through key locations on campus featuring a variety of activities including speeches from disability advocates, info booths, and interactive sessions. Attendees had the opportunity to learn more about ongoing initiatives and how they can contribute to creating more inclusive environments.

22News spoke with the Executive Director for Disability Action Center Northwest about the non-profit’s goal when reaching out to the community.

“Most significantly right now, of course, we’re wanting to get out the disability vote,” said Mark Leeper. “Encouraging people, whoever you vote for, get out, and vote. That’s part of the power we have as Americans.”

Students, faculty, staff, and community members joined in solidarity as they advocated for meaningful change and celebrated the achievements of individuals with disabilities.
