CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The City of Chicopee is set to open a long-forgotten time capsule from 1976.

The time capsule, buried as part of the United States Bicentennial celebrations, was rediscovered after being overlooked for more than two decades. Mayor John Vieau, the City Council President, and other Chicopee officials will preside over the opening, marking a key event in the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in 2026.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the City of Chicopee to reconnect with its past and honor the craftsmanship of the Chicopee COMP vocational students who built the time capsule,” Mayor Vieau said. “We’re also looking forward to contributing to the legacy of future generations with items for the 250th anniversary. This moment is a powerful reminder of the community spirit that has always been a part of Chicopee’s history and future.”

The event will feature the unveiling of selected letters and artifacts preserved within the capsule. These items will be displayed at the Front Street Library following the event. After the display period, city officials plan to reseal the capsule with new items commemorating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Revolution, to be opened again during the 300th anniversary in 2076.

The opening of the time capsule is part of a broader celebration of Chicopee’s rich history and a nod to the future generations who will carry that legacy forward.

The event is open to the public and will be held at Chicopee City Hall, located at 17 Springfield St., on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
