Springfield sees second homicide in less than a week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield police are investigating the city’s second homicide in less than a week.

In less than a week there have been two deadly incidents in the city of Springfield.

On Sunday, 40-year-old Daniel Sanchez was killed when he was shot in the North End, and just days later, a man, who has yet to be identified, died early Wednesday morning following a shooting on Hancock Street. So far, no arrests have been made.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni told 22News, “I have an assistant DA working with the Springfield Police right now we are going to chase down what happened early this morning and we will figure it out.”

Springfield police say one murder is too many but there has been a reduction in gun violence from last year, and that’s by 30%. So far this year the city has seen 15 homicides compared to the same time last year when there were 27 homicides.

Springfield generally averages about 18 to 22 homicides a year, but last year saw a historic 31. “The decrease in gun violence in the city is a testament to our officers’ proactive efforts, the District Attorney’s office continuing to push for dangerousness hearings for the violent offenders and the courts for holding some of these individuals,” says Ryan Walsh, spokesman for the Springfield Police Department. “The totality of these three factors equates to lives saved.”

Gulluni adds, “We are acting preventatively, the police departments, including state police, are working very hard to keep the city streets safe. And we are going to solve these cases, we are going to bring people to justice. And we are going to get justice for the victim’s families in these homicide cases.”
