CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Tuesday is National Pierogi Day, which recognizes an international dish that is a type of dumpling.

Holyokes 4th annual Paper City Food Festival returns

According to the National Day Calendar , Pierogi is the plural of the rarely used Polish word pierog . It is spelled several different ways in English, such as perogi and pierogy. Regardless of how you spell it, the semicircular dough is stuffed with savory fillings before being boiled. After they are boiled, they are either fried in butter or baked to finish cooking them.

Some of the most common pierogi combinations include:

    • mashed potato filling
    • potato and cheese
    • potato and onion
    • cheese
    • cabbage
    • sauerkraut
    • ground meat
    • mushroom
    • spinach or fruit.

Pierogis can be served with toppings such as melted butter, sour cream, fried bacon crumbles, sautéed mushrooms, and onions and/or green onion. While many eat pierogi as a main dish in other countries, Americans usually consider it a side dish.
