CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Superior Court Judge Francis “Frank” Flannery has died.

Judge Flannery was nominated to the court by Governor Charlie Baker on July 25, 2018, and was unanimously confirmed by the Governor’s Council about a month later. He served as the first assistant district attorney at the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office and the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office as an assistant district attorney.

Trial Court Spokesperson Jennifer Donahue told 22News that sessions in Hampden Superior Court are suspended on Monday.

Superior Court Chief Justice Michael D. Ricciuti stated, “Judge Flannery’s dedication to justice, commitment to excellence, and deep compassion has left a lasting impact on the legal community in western Massachusetts. This is a tremendous loss to our western colleagues, the entire Court, and the Commonwealth at large.”

Hampden County Sheriff’s Office stated, “Judge Flannery presided over some of the most notable criminal and civil cases in Western Massachusetts over the past six years, and he was known for being firm, but fair,” Sheriff Cocchi said. “He was highly regarded by everyone who knew him and will be missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends in this difficult time.”

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of the Honorable Frank Flannery.

A cherished former attorney at our law firm, Judge Flannery had most recently served as an Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court. His dedication to justice, commitment to excellence, and deep compassion left a lasting impact on colleagues, clients, and the wider legal community.

Frank was not only a respected legal mind but also a mentor and friend to many. His sudden loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Frank. Your legacy will not be forgotten.”
