Sen. JD Vance blasted Vice President Kamala Harris during his first solo campaign stop in Michigan at the Shelby Township Police Department.

"We've got to throw Kamala Harris out of office, not give her a promotion, and that's what our law enforcement needs," said the Republican nominee for vice president to a small group of invited guests and the media Wednesday.

The Vance campaign and Police Chief Robert Shelide highlighted alleged crimes of illegal immigrants that detectives in Shelby Township have investigated in recent months.

"Our police officers have dealt with three acts over the last few months involving criminals who have entered the country illegally. Two of those acts have been horrific," Shelide said.

Vance then said when President Donald Trump was in office, they were building a border wall that made it "harder for illegal aliens to come here in the first place."

"The thing with the border and all that stuff, they just need to work on getting that together and try to do what's best for the country," Kathy Clayton of Macomb Township said.

Vance said while he supports legal immigration, the tables will quickly turn on those who are in the U.S. illegally on day one if he and former President Donald Trump are elected.

With the general election just three months away, 7 News Detroit reached out to women voters in Macomb County to hear what they're hoping the candidates focus on as their campaigns kick into high gear.

"(What's) really important to me is inflation because gas prices are through the roof, these groceries are just insane," Joann Marino of Washington Township said.

The state of the economy came up several times when talking with women voters in Macomb County.

"I feel so sorry for the families now, what they're spending a month for the groceries and they can't afford their rent," Clayton said.

Sharon Boettcher said, "Definitely the economy... just coming out of grocery store, it's a lot more than it used to be."

Vance said prices need to go down.

"And the way you do that really is unleashing American energy, unleashing American farmers and not spending like a drunken sailor, which is what Kamala Harris has done during her time in office," Vance said.

Abortion was another concern among women voters.

"I'm pro-life and so for me, it's important that we have a candidate that's going to support us," Marino said.

Harris and her running mate Tim Walz made a campaign stop in metro Detroit Wednesday evening and will also be in Michigan on Thursday.
